Long Distances

Posted by admin     Category: Education, General

My husband is in the military and he tends to be assigned in different locations all through out the year. My son is now in his first year in college and he got a full scholarship at  a   university  in Texas, so he moved to Texas. I am separated physically from the two most important men in my life. Though my daughter who is still in high school stays with me, I still miss my men. So I upgraded my regular phone service to Qwest Phone. I often do long distance calls to my husband and my son and we know that long distance calls can be very expensive. Good thing Qwest has a long distance package where in I can call long distance at a much discounted monthly rate. And since Qwest offers clear connections even on long distance calls, I get to spend more time talking with my husband and my son uninterrupted.

My great grandmother once told me that if I want to see the man that will be my husband, I should wait for the full moon and  when the clock strikes 12 midnight, I should lit a candle and look at the old mirror at the basement. The basement was pitch dark when I descended and the faint light from my candle was the only source of light. The basement was vast with old furniture but the full body mirror my grandmother was telling me was right in the middle of the basement. Waiting for me. I went towards it while uttering the omen. When I saw in front of the mirror, I looked straight on it. What I saw made me stand like a statue.

The Red Shoes

I was in the subway train on the way home when I noticed a pair of red stilleto under the bench opposite me. And since almost all the people were sleeping and some were reading, I picked up the shoes and instantly I seemed to hear voices from nowhere. I tried the shoes on and an undescribable heat overcome me. I noticed the man sitting beside me, asleep. I reached into my handbag and when my hand felt the ball point pen, things happened in a flash. The next thing I knew the man beside me has a hole in the side of his neck and blood was oozing from it. There was a commotion and everybody was rushing away from the train. I left unnoticed. I felt a sense of contentment engulfing me.

Tick Tock

Before I log out from work, I received a message from my mother. She wants me to come home because she cooked my favorite meal, bacon stuffed roast chicken with tartar sauce and buttered asparagus. Though the invitation was tempting I declined the offer. I have other plans that night. I will meet a girl, who had been my chat mate for a couple of months now. I will have dinner at her home. When I reached her home, I was starving, it was a three hour drive from the city. I could smell the roast chicken and asparagus back at home with red wine, my mouth watered. When I was ushered in the dining table after meeting her parents, what I saw in the table almost made me swoon. Fried frogs, sauteed dog’s tail, buttered rats ear and bitter gourd juice for the drinks. I forgot her family loves exotic foods.

The problem that always arises with regards to education are those students who are not interested to go to school and and they consider themselves that has a lower IQ. What will be the solution then? Some says that half of all children are below average. While we concedes each child should have full opportunity to develop his abilities to the utmost. No documentation exists which would support the current educational establishment’s wishful thinking that it can significantly alter a student’s low ability, whether through more money spent, revised pedagogy, or better teacher training. Dismissive of the government’s and politician’s hysterical optimism which has produced such absurdities as no children should be left behind. With a revalorization of vocational studies and a return of respect for those frequently skilled students who choose to go into such rather than prepare for college. That far too many people are pushed toward college these days, and far too often for highly questionable reasons. Some are more interested to work than to study why not support them wherein they are more skilled into their field far more with those students who are now studying for such courses. A necessary return to reality he expects will start with parents taking responsibility and increasingly making the right educational choices, choices in the direction of charter schools, home-schooling, CTE schools - whatever may best suit the talents and abilities of their particular children. At the university level, professors will surely tire of post-modern sophistry and realize they can ignore Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Michelangelo, Da Vinci, with these talented individuals are sometimes ignored by our new generation but from here we really learn the reality of life.

In our education our teacher plays important role in every students life to them they get their knowledge and through them students improve their talents and abilities specially the kids, that is why we use different strategies and philosophy of working with kids from difficult backgrounds and the logic and reasoning of approach, a better understanding of the hows and whys of what to do from reading their work, working with challenging older kids, it’s both an intellectual and visceral approach ON teaching that will help you avoid many confrontations with kids before they ever happen, and give you the understanding of how to handle the battles you can’t avoid. Holding kids to high standards of behavior sends the message to your students that you believe that they are capable of great things, but it can take years to build the skills. A teacher needs to get to that point of understanding kids that have to return everyday to very difficult lives at home. Many teachers of kids with tough home lives fail because they never really understood the lives of the young people they were dealing with. Understanding the reasoning and emotions behind unreasonable classroom behavior is the key and surviving as a teacher. These behaviors have roots in what these kids have to go through everyday. There is much to remind you of the positive and long-lasting effects a caring teacher can have, and that the balance of positive reinforcement with a tough determination for high standards is key to getting the best out of our kids. There are many aspects of working with tough kids that will never make it into the education school textbooks, a manifestation of the great and ridiculous divide between educational research and classroom practice. It is not only IQ should be considered but also EQ should also be taken care of.
